medical publications processed in cumed and pubmed data bases: cienfuegos, cuba, 1998-2007
Objective: to characterize the scientific production of the medical science school in Cienfuegos,Cuba.Material and methods: a bibliometric descriptive study in the CUMED and PubMed data basesfrom 1998 to 2007. In the searching strategy the word “Cienfuegos” was used in PubMed andalso in Havana CUMED, meanwhile in Cienfuegos CUMED “$” was used. The number ofpublications, languages and types, name of the journals, editor country, institution whichprovided the article, among other variables were analyzed. Registrations out this period,repetitive articles, incongruent articles, mistaken seizures, overlapping, CD-ROM, abstracts, andbooks were excluded.Results: 288 publications were studied. In general, the number of publications per year increasedprogressively with a tendency to augment, except in the last two years (2006, 2007). 51.3% of thepublications in PubMed, appeared in the Neurology Journal and in the British Medical Journal.48.6% of the publications in Havana CUMED appeared in Medisur Journal, Cuban Journal ofMedicine and Cuban Journal of Paediatrics. 92.2% of the publications In Cienfuegos CUMEDwere shown in Medisur and Finlay Journals. University Hospital “Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima”was the medical institution with the highest number of publication in PubMed (83.8%) andCienfuegos CUMED (47.9%). The most common publication was the original article (56.6%).The most predominant topics were Internal Medicine (18.1%) and Paediatrics (16.3%).Conclusions: It was observed in detailed, for the first time, what is the scientific activity of healthprofessionals in Cienfuegos, Cuba.
