Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar, sob a ótica do desenvolvimento sustentável, características socioeconômicas do desenvolvimento da piscicultura no baixo rio São Francisco alagoano. Foram entrevistados piscicultores ativos e inativos da região, entre março e julho de 2005. Os resultados indicaram, principalmente, que o nível de renda pode ser determinante para o desenvolvimento de uma piscicultura comercial sustentável, com parte dos pequenos produtores dependendo de subsídio governamental.
This work aims at analyzing the development of fish farming in the lower region of the São Francisco River in the State of Alagoas, Brazil. We interviewed active and inactive fish farmers from this region between March and July 2005. The obtained results show mainly that the level of income can be determining for the development of sustainable and profitable fish farming taking into account that some of the small producers depend on governmental subsidies.
