Entre 1662 y 1667 Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 3º conde de Castelo Melhor, gobernó la Monarquía portuguesa como valido del rey don Alfonso VI. Durante estos años, el conde introdujo un conjunto de prácticas de gobierno características de los privados españoles, como el control de la casa real y el manejo personal de los procesos de decisión política de la corona. En este artículo nos centraremos en los argumentos usados por los aliados del conde para justificar su privanza. Debido a la oposición a la figura del privado en el Portugal restaurado y a los cambios estructurales en las monarquías europeas de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII, los aliados de Castelo Melhor defendieron su intervención en el gobierno mediante su asociación con las victorias militares de Portugal en el conflicto peninsular y a través de su oficio de escribano de la puridad

From 1662 to 1667 Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, 3rd count of Castelo Melhor, ruled the Portuguese monarchy as favorite of the King Alfonse VI. At that time, the count implemented a set of governmental practices typical of the Spanish privados, as the control of the royal household and the personal handling of the decision making process of the crown. In this article we concentrate in the arguments used by the Count’s allies in order to justify his position as king’s favorite. With the opposition to the valido in the Restored Portugal, and structural changes of the European monarchies in the second half of the 17th, the supporters of the Count justified his intervention in the government associating him with the military victories of Portugal in the conflict against the Spanish Monarchy, as well as, through his office of scrivener of the secret seal.
