Abstract
A research was developed in the Agricultural Municipal Enterprice in Fomento, on the period 2001-
2008, with the objective of evaluating the impact of the entrance of the insect Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari. A
descriptive study was carried out in order to do so, using the non experimental method with a longitudinal design.
Fomento Coffee Enterprice possesses seven UBPC, two CPA, four strengthened CCS and a benefit coffee plant,
planting Coffea arabica L varieties (yellow and red Caturra, Borbón, Island, Catuay, Catimor) in mountains and premountain
areas and Coffea canephora var. Robust, in the valley. H.hampei has caused a negative phytosanitary
impact on coffee plantations because of the high infection indexes observed from its entrance in the year 2001. Eight
positive environmental impacts were determined, the most important were, the increment of the biodiversity, the
increase in the use of biological means. As in the case of negative impacts, it were observed the augmentation of the
toxic load, increases of the abandoned areas and the demolition of these. Among the positive social impacts thirteen
settled down, the most important, increase in training, decrease of the exodus of professionals, bigger employment
source and the negative one was low prices of coffee. Negative economic impacts were the expenses in the control
measures, low yields and the bad quality of coffee and the non profitability of the Enterprise. It was considered that
negative impacts caused by the pest are reversible except for the expenses of control measures.
