Abstract

Terror destroys the social, symbolic and normative system of a society. Based on the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the articles in this anthology attempt to explain and depict the essence of terror and the possibilities available to a society to restore its order. Through various methods (quantitative content analysis, discourse analysis, participant observation, etc.) the contributions demonstrate how September 11th was interpreted publicly; for example, Matthias JUNGE, in his article, uses press reports from Germany explaining the terrorist attacks as basically an expression of immovable cultural differences; Michael SCHWAB-TRAPP illustrates the limits of a legitimate interpretation of 9/11 using discourse analysis.
