There are different opinionsabout to classify onychophagia, but according toDSM-IV-TR it is classified as impulse control disorder nototherwise specified. The knowledge about treatment ofonychophagia is limited. There are a few studies abouttreatment of onychophagia with psychotherapy and astudy with pharmacotherapy. Some studies suggest thatan atypical antipsychotic aripiprazole may have beneficialeffects in the treatment of impulse control disorders.
