Heute betrachten es die Unterhaltsträger von Bibliotheken als problematisch, dass die Bibliotheken quasi auf Vorrat sammeln – für einen ungewissen Bedarfsfall in der Zukunft. Bibliotheken sollen nur noch die Informationen und Texte in elektronischer Form besorgen, die von ihren Nutzern aktuell gebraucht werden. Aber: Befriedigen Bibliotheken mit einer E-Only-Strategie den Bedarf tatsächlich, insbesondere in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften? Was sind die Kernaufgaben der wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken im digitalen Zeitalter? Today, library funding bodies consider it problematic that libraries effectively collect items in advance – for uncertain future uses. From this perspective, libraries should care only about information and texts in electronic format as currently needed. However, is this e-only strategy appropriate to meet the users’ actual needs, particularly with regard to the humanities and social sciences? What are the core functions of academic libraries in the digital age?
