RESUMO: Estudou-se em 32 encéfalos de fetos de búfalos sem raça definida (SRD), em diferentes fases de desenvolvimento, sendo 19 fêmeas e 13 machos, a formação, o trajeto, o calibre e ramificações da artéria basilar. Deste total, 30 deles tiveram seus contigentes arteriais injetados com látex corado com pigmento específico, tendo sido fixados com solução de formol a 20 % e dissecados; no restante injetou-se acetato de vinil corado, seguindo-se corrosão em ácido sulfúrico a 30 %, então lavado em água corrente. Os resultados mostraram que a artéria basilar é ímpar, resultando da união dos ramos caudais (direito e esquerdo) da artéria carótida do encéfalo, na porção rostral da ponte. Dispõe-se longitudinal e ventralmente à ponte e bulbo. Apresenta redução de calibre rostro-caudalmente (100 %); apresenta-se retilínea (66,7 %), com sinuosidades discretas (30,0 %) ou sinuosidade evidente (3,3 %); formação "em ilha" (13,3 %). Da artéria basilar originam-se: artérias cerebelares caudais direita e esquerda (100 %); artérias pontinas e artérias bulbares. PALAVRAS CHAVES: Búfalos, Artérias, Encéfalo, Anatomia, Vascularização. SUMMARY: There have been studied in 32 encephalons of buffalo fetuses (Bubalus bubalis), without espcified breed, in different phases of development 19 females and 13 males the formation, course, caliber and ramifications of the basilar artery. 30 of them were injected, via artery, with coloured latex, fixed in 20 % formaldehyde and further dissected. In the remnants a colored vinyl acetate solution was injected followed by corrosion in a 30 % sulfuric acid solution and then washed in tap water. The results showed that the basilar artery is unequal, resulting from the union of caudal branches (right and left) of carotid artery of the encephalon in the rortral part of the pontis. It is positioned, longitudinally and ventrally to the bulb and the pontis. It presents a reduction in caliber, rostro-caudalis (100 %). It continues in a rectilinear (66.7 %) direction, with discrete sinuosities (30.0%) or with evident sinuosities (3.3 %); arrangement like "island"(13.3 %). From the basilar artery arises: arteries cereberal caudalis right and left (100 %); besides numerous vessels to the pontis and to the bulb.
