Abstract
This study presents a qualitative impact assessment of Project REGALove: “Spreading Essence of Love Through Gift-Giving,” implemented on December 18, 2023, in Barangay Bugatay, Peñablanca, Cagayan. Conceptualized by the University of Cagayan Valley (UCV) through the School of Liberal Arts and Teacher Education (SLATE), the Mathematics and Science Department, and the English Club, the initiative evaluated the transition of a seasonal outreach activity into a sustainable, high-impact extension program.
Grounded in Social Exchange Theory, the P.A.R.E. (Preparation, Action, Reflection, Evaluation) Model, and UCV’s foundational philosophy of inclusive access to quality and social education, the study utilized a qualitative descriptive research design with an evaluative focus. Data were gathered through a triangulation approach comprising narrative analysis, documentary review of 54 program photographs, and formal community testimonials.
Thematic findings reveal that Project REGALove significantly enhanced the immediate morale, sense of hope, and perceived social support among rural families, effectively bridging the urban-rural divide. Structurally, the execution of the P.A.R.E. framework facilitated a shift from transactional, charity-based gift distribution to reciprocal, relationship-based community engagement. Furthermore, active interdisciplinary participation served as a formative laboratory for faculty and student volunteers, reinforcing UCV’s "Culture of Excellence" and fostering prosocial leadership and civic consciousness.
Finally, the initiative operationalizes localized action toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), while fulfilling Commission on Higher Education (CHED) extension mandates. Strategic recommendations advocate for adopting Barangay Bugatay as a long-term partner community, integrating service-learning into the SLATE curriculum, and leveraging social impact narratives for institutional recognition.
