Abstract

This study assessed the academic performance in Science of Grade 8 students at Dapdap High School, Bamban West District, Division of Tarlac Province, during the 2024–2025 school year using a quantitative-descriptive research design. The study determined the students' level of academic performance based on their final grades and identified their learning weaknesses aligned with the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs). Based on the findings, drill exercises were developed and evaluated by experts in terms of content, quality of presentation, and physical make-up. Data were obtained from 481 Grade 8 students and Science teachers. Results revealed that most students demonstrated an average level of academic performance. The identified learning weaknesses included ecosystem material cycling, the concept of species, and the distinction between heat and temperature at the molecular level. The developed drill exercises were rated as very acceptable across all evaluation criteria. The study recommends the use of the drill exercises to address students' learning gaps and improve their academic performance in Science.
