Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the nuanced maternal strategies and experiences involved in facilitating the social adaptation of school-age children (aged 6–12) within multicultural families. Drawing on ecological systems theory and bicultural identity integration frameworks, the study examines how mothers navigate cultural dissonance, language heritage preservation, and school-based socialization challenges. Semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 mothers from bi-national or multi-ethnic households residing in urban metropolitan areas. The thematic analysis revealed three primary maternal roles: cultural mediator, emotional anchor, and institutional advocate. Mothers strategically deploy code-switching, narrative storytelling, and targeted community engagement to foster bicultural competence in their children while buffering against peer discrimination and identity confusion. Furthermore, the findings highlight that maternal self-efficacy and access to supportive parental networks significantly enhance children's socio-emotional resilience and school adjustment. This research underscores the need for school systems and family support organizations to recognize multicultural mothers as crucial partners in promoting inclusive educational environments and holistic child development.
