Abstract

This transcendental phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of middle adolescents as they navigated self-discovery and identity formation in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat. The study involved 10 participants aged 14-17 who identified as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. They were purposively selected, and their experiences were gathered through in-depth semi-structured interviews. Thematic content analysis was used to identify common patterns and themes across their stories. The findings showed that family, peers, school, community, and societal expectations played an important role in how participants understood and expressed their identities. Their narratives reflected moments of confusion, self-doubt, fear or rejection, and emotional difficulty as they tried to understand themselves while responding to the expectations around them. However, their experiences also reflected gradual self-acceptance and growing confidence in expressing who they are. Support from other, greater awareness of gender diversity, and personal reflection helped participants make sense of their experiences and move toward accepting themselves. Overall, the study shows that identity formation is a personal and ongoing process shaped by both individual experiences and relationships with others. The findings emphasize the value of creating supportive and inclusive spaces in families, schools, and communities where LGBTQ+ adolescents can feel accepted, respected, and safe as they explore and develop their identities. The study offers insights that may help educators, parents, guidance counselors, and other stakeholders better understand the experiences of adolescents navigating self-discovery and identity formation.
