Abstract

In 1988, as an initial activity of the “10 de Octubre” Project in the municipality of “10 de Octubre”, 3 011 persons aged 25-64 were examined. 5 years later, 2 535 of them were reexamined, 84.2 % were taken from the initial sample aimed at determining the risk levels of variables known as coronary risk factors (hypercholesterolemia, arterial hypertension, smoking and diabetes mellitus) in relation to general and specific mortality during the observation period, as well as the risk for suffering a myocardial infarction and/or cerebrovascular disease. Data were directly obtained by interviewing and examining each of them. The family was interviewed when the person was dead. Their medical histories were reviewed and their family physician was also interviewed. The previous history of myocardial infarction, the high levels of serum cholesterol and the systolic arterial hypertension (³ 140 mmHg) increased the risk for dying in general, with relative risks of 4.11; 3.46 and 2.82, respectively (p< 0.05). Hypercholesterolemia quintupled the risk of death in the specific mortality from myocardial infarction. The mortality from cerebrovascular diseases rose considerably with systolic hypertension (8.5 times more) and with the history of cardiac infarction (a two-fold increase). The non fatal myocardial infarctions were more common in those who had already suffered from an infarction and in cases with hypercholesterolemia. The frequency of the non fatal cerebrovascular accidents was quintuplicated in systolic arterial hypertension.
