In this paper we describe the historical development in distance education from a general point of view. We resume the historical evolution of internet, and its relationship with important social issues as communication, defense, and education. The technology of information development in the last two decades has been extraordinary. This techonolgies has been applied to the education sector. The possibility to acces the education programs which are not feasible to study because of the physical distance are now possible by the use of internet.
