Abstract

This study explored the intercultural and family dynamics of Filipino American families in Yakima, Washington State, with emphasis on how they balance traditional Filipino cultural values and American individualistic ideals. Specifically, it examined the influence of Filipino values on family relationships, the effects of acculturation across generations, the preservation of cultural practices, and the ways families navigate dual cultural identities. Guided by a qualitative research design, the study sought to understand how Filipino American families maintain cultural continuity while adapting to the social and cultural environment of the United States. The study employed a qualitative approach using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Filipino and Filipino American participants representing first-, second-, and third-generation immigrants residing in Yakima, Washington. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns related to cultural values, family communication, adaptation, and identity formation. The findings revealed that family obligation, respect for elders, and strong family orientation remained central values despite prolonged exposure to American culture. Participants demonstrated a bicultural pattern of adaptation by integrating selected American practices while preserving Filipino traditions through language use, family gatherings, religious activities, and cultural celebrations. Family decision-making increasingly reflected egalitarian relationships, although traditional values such as interdependence and respect continued to influence household interactions. The study concluded that Filipino American families in Yakima successfully balance cultural preservation and adaptation by developing a bi-cultural identity that incorporates both Filipino and American values. While challenges such as generational differences, communication styles, financial pressures, and cultural expectations persist, strong family relationships and active cultural transmission contribute to maintaining Filipino identity across generations. The findings underscore the importance of family, community support, and cultural engagement in fostering resilience and sustaining heritage within immigrant communities. The study also provides valuable insights for educators, community organizations, and future researchers seeking to support Filipino American families and promote culturally responsive programs.
