Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of platformized nostalgia by investigating how retro-media revival communities on Reddit construct, perform, and commercialize collective cultural memory. As digital platforms increasingly mediate contemporary cultural consumption, user-generated subreddits focused on vintage media—such as analog video technology, retro gaming equipment, and late twentieth-century aesthetics—have emerged as central hubs for affective engagement and subcultural capital. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach combining computational textual analysis of 15,000 posts across three major retro-focused subreddits (r/vhs, r/90s, and r/crtgaming) with qualitative discourse analysis of top-voted user threads, this research illuminates how platform affordances shape retro-media discourse. The findings reveal three predominant thematic dimensions: material fetishism and the valuation of tactile authenticity, affective anti-modernism in response to digital saturation, and the algorithmic commodification of historical media artifacts. Ultimately, the paper argues that platformized nostalgia operates as a dual mechanism—functioning simultaneously as an active, subcultural resistance to modern streaming ecosystems and as a self-commodifying audience practice that feeds platform engagement engines.
