Abstract

The research titled “Affordable Scientific Exploration: Integrating the Mobile Microscope on Biology Laboratory Performance” aimed to assess the potential of the Makero-scope, a mobile microscope, as an alternative to traditional laboratory microscopes in Grade 7 biology education. Limited access to laboratory equipment hinders learners’ ability to perform hands-on experiments. This study addressed that gap by evaluating whether the Makero-scope could offer comparable learning outcomes. A quasi-experimental quantitative research design was employed. Grade 7 learners from Saint Francis of Assisi College (Bacoor and Las Piñas campuses) were selected through purposive sampling. The study was conducted in two phases: pre-laboratory (using traditional microscopes) and post-laboratory (using the Makero-scope). Learners were evaluated using a validated performance rubric, and feedback was gathered through a Likert-scale survey. Evaluators were assigned to grade the activities to ensure objectivity. Statistical data showed a significant performance improvement (t = 3.95, p < 0.05) after using the Makero-scope. Groups from Las Piñas reached the “Viable Alternative” level, while groups from Bacoor were rated under “Needs Minor Refinement.” Survey results also indicated strong learner agreement on the tool’s usability and relevance in observing plant and animal cells. Based on these findings, the study recommends implementing an orientation program for both learners and teachers to support effective use of the mobile microscope “Makero-scope” in laboratory instruction. This includes inviting the inventor, Mr. Jeremy De Leon, or a representative from his team to serve as a resource speaker to conduct demonstrations and tutorials. The initiative aims to maximize the educational potential of the mobile microscope and promote its sustainable integration into local and international high school science laboratories.
