Abstract

Advanced age is usually followed by chronic health issues, which pose some significant psychosocial challenges to the elderly. The objective of this study was to explain the lived experience, difficulties, and coping mechanisms of the elderly with chronic illnesses to uncover their psychosocial resilience and its efficacy on their overall quality of life. A qualitative research design framed by a phenomenological approach spearheaded this research and centered on asking elderly individuals about their subjective experiences. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, while thematic analysis helped to determine the common patterns and insights. Outcomes indicate that older individuals endure stress, emotional distress, and financial pressures that further exacerbate their health condition. The ongoing anxiety of medical expenses and the unaided situation aggravates their concern, negatively affecting their physical, emotional, and social life. However, resilience is gained with various coping skills, like strong family and social support, religion, and optimism. Despite adversity, a majority of elderly individuals possess the spirit of gratitude and resilience and draw solace in their families and religion. Based on the findings of this study, it is proposed to utilize support programs based on the community, increased access to healthcare, and economic assistance solely for older individuals with chronic disease. It can be further advanced to improve the quality of their lives by securing their social relationships and integrating psychosocial interventions. Future studies can examine the effectiveness of intervention programs to boost resilience in this vulnerable population.
