Chemical Biology, Diagnostics And Therapeutics

Welcome to Chemical Biology, Diagnostics and Therapeutics

Modern cutting-edge Chemical Biology is driving the understanding of Biology at a molecular level. It makes key contributions to the progress of novel developments in healthcare, the environment, bioenergy systems and bio-nanotechnology. To address these challenges, we investigate the properties of a wide range of biomolecules – including an assortment of DNA, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates – which may range from small synthetic models to biologically-derived macromolecular complexes.

A key strength of the Chemical Biology, Diagnostics and Therapeutics sections is the diversity of research projects, which provides us with a mutual support network, both intellectually and practically. The excitement of research at the chemistry-biology interface of comes in part from its inherently multidisciplinary nature and our projects routinely involved collaborations within University of Southampton, with other institutions or with industrial partners.

We acknowledge the generous support for our Research from a wide range of sponsors, including Research Councils, charities, other funding agencies and via our strong links with industrial partners.

Research Interests

Specific research projects include:

Enzyme Catalysis: understanding enzyme catalysis, including reactive intermediates. Applications in inhibitor discovery and biocatalyst development for green biotransformations.

Protein-Protein Interactions: identification of cyclic peptide inhibitors of protein-protein interaction using a genetically encoded high-throughput screening platform; applications in cell biology, including cancer.

Post-translational Modifications: understanding the mechanisms of ubiquitin and its related enzymes, and carbohydrate processing enzymes.

Lipidomics: to explore the effect of reduced dimensionality and molecular crowding on the properties of complex reaction networks (and in particular biochemical reaction networks).

BioNanoPhotonics: expertise in Raman spectroscopy, molecular and chemical imaging, fabrication and characterisation of metallic nanomaterials for plasmonics. Application of spectroscopy to neuroscience, pulmonary diseases and regenerative medicine
