Abstract

By describing the activities of consuls Buenaventura Vivó and Andres Clemente Vázquez in Havana, this work studies Mexico's political strategies regarding the Caribbean during two crucial moments in the nineteenth century. The two consular periods chosen by the  author show  that  Mexican representatives in Havana had a clear idea of what Mexico needed in order to protect its interests in a land where  imperial powers were defending their own needs and which the United States considered their natural area of expansion.
