En el proyecto y construcción del Palacio Legislativo de Montevideo fue decisiva la participación de profesionales italianos. El concurso internacional convocado en 1904 fue ganado por el piamontés Vittorio Meano que en ese momento estaba dirigiendo la construcción del Teatro Colón y el Congreso Nacional en Buenos Aires. La muerte de Meano determinó por un lado el cambio de ubicación del edificio y por otro la ampliación de los planos originales por los arquitectos uruguayos Jacobo Vázquez Varela y Antonio Banchini. Frente al deseo del presidente de la República José Batlle y Ordóñez de revestir el edificio con mármoles y de monumentalizarlo la Comisión del Palacio contrató al arquitecto lombardo Gaetano Moretti quien continuaría con las obras hasta la inauguración del edificio en 1925. Moretti no solo se ocupó del edificio sino también de proponer un plan regulador de la plaza y de las calles adyacentes. The project and construction of the Legislative Palace of Montevideo was significantly marked by the participation of Italian professionals. The international bid held in 1904 was awarded to the Piedmontese architect Vittorio Meano who, at the time, was directing the construction of the Colón Theater and the National Congress building in Buenos Aires. Meano’s death determined, on the one hand, a change in the location of the building and, on the other, an enlargement of the original plans by the Uruguayan architects Jacobo Vázquez Varela and Antonio Banchini. In order to satisfy the wish of the then President of Uruguay José Batlle y Ordóñez in terms of monumentalizing the building and facing it with marble, the Palace Committee engaged the services of architect Gaetano Moretti of Lombardy who carried on with the works up until the inauguration of the building in 1925. Moretti not only directed the construction work but also proposed a regulatory plan for the plaza and the surrounding streets.
