Abstract
It is well known that the strategic power of ancient Athens rested on its formidable navy, but the value to the Athenians - and later to the Romans- Of the silver mines of Attica is less well understood. The Institute's newly appointed Professor of Archaeological Materials and Technologies describes his investigation of the impressive ancient mining installations that survive near Lavrion in southern Attica.
