Abstract

The aim of this study is determined as the music terms which are suffered changes, which are forgotten and which adopted and are entered into the Turkish music terminology, used in the western music theory books published in Turkey. In other words, to reveal the change and improvement of the terminology used in the books as mentioned. For this purpose, western music theory books published so far been achieved since 1900 and determined the frequently used main terms of the music theory. These terms are ranked according to the years and the percentage of usage, which terms are suffered a change, which are adopted and tried to determine what terms are used today. The research is a descriptive study of the data created with document review. The data of the study are obtained the terms used in the western music theory books from Mehmed Zati’s “Kütüphane-i Musikiden Tedrisat-ı Musiki” (Ottoman Turkish) in 1915 published up to the present day (N=27). The terms formed data and Turkish equivalents are presented in table. According to the findings, it can be said that almost every term treated were suffered a change and progressed during the 112 year. The first 50 years of terms translation to Turkish studies are examined between 1900-2012. It is seen that translations are made from French, the origin of the words used in translations are Arabic and Turkish, after 1950 self-Turkish meanings are used. Although previous studies, many used terms was failed. As a result, it is seen that the terms come until today and commonly used in music theory books are classified as:1.Translated into Turkish translation terms 2.The terms of foreign origin are written as they read in Turkish
