Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, comparativo y prospectivo de 132 pacientes con disfunción de la articulación temporomandibular clasificados según el grado de severidad, los cuales asistieron a la consulta especializada de la Clínica Estomatológica Provincial Docente de Santiago de Cuba desde marzo del 2009 hasta septiembre del 2010, a fin de determinar los beneficios obtenidos con la terapia ultrasónica en los enfermos. En la serie, los más afectados fueron: el sexo femenino, el grupo etario de 40-49 años y el grado de severidad con menor cuantía fue el severo, en tanto las disfunciones leves y moderadas tuvieron proporciones similares. Al aplicar las terapias ultrasónica y convencional, el grupo que recibió tratamiento con la primera fue el que evolucionó satisfactoriamente.
A descriptive, comparative and prospective study of 132 patients with disorders of the temporomandibular joint, classified according to the degree of severity, who attended the specialized department of the Provincial Teaching Dental Clinic from Santiago de Cuba was carried out from March, 2009 to September, 2010, in order to determine the benefits obtained with the ultrasonic therapy in the sick persons. In the series, the most affected were: the female sex, the age group 40-49, and the severe cases were few in number, while the mild and moderate disorders had similar proportions. When applying the ultrasonic and conventional therapies, the group that received treatment with the first one was that with a satisfactory clinical course.
