Abstract
Social networks are not new, they have always existed. Today with the technological advances they have evolved into modern online communication links, producing impacts on society and education. Students of all levels are part of them and devote many hours to browsing them, something that worries parents and teachers, who fear it will negatively affect their academic activities. However, according to George Siemen`s concept of connectivism, the contacts of an online social network translate into valuable sources of information and feedback of academic content. Therefore it is considered that it is appropriate to use social networks in educational processes, through proper planning
and implementation of strategies, rather than prohibiting or vetoing their use in educational institutions.
