Negli ultimi due anni l'espansione di intermediazione bancaria in Italia ha subito una battuta d'arresto . La riduzione della quota di ricchezza finanziaria dell'economia rappresentata dai depositi bancari e il rapporto tra depositi bancari e il prodotto interno lordo ha scatenato un vivace dibattito , in particolare nel sistema bancario . Tuttavia , finora non ci sono state analisi sistematiche delle cause di questo fenomeno . Il presente lavoro prende in esame la recente " disintermediazione " bancaria utilizzando gli strumenti analitici di economia monetaria. Un'analisi econometrica di una funzione di domanda per i depositi bancari offre una "spiegazione " del perchè loro tasso di crescita è diminuito e  permette di quantificare i fattori causali . Inoltre , è possibile simulare questo modello per ricavare implicazioni in termini di tendenze future .

Over the past two years the expansion of banking intermediation in Italy has come to a halt. The reduction in the share of financial wealth of the economy represented by bank deposits and in the ratio of bank deposits to gross domestic product has sparked a lively debate, particularly in the banking system. However, thus far there have been no systematic analyses of the causes of this phenomenon. The present work examines the recent banking "disintermediation" using the analytical tools of monetary economics. An econometric analysis of a demand function for bank deposits offers an "explanation" of their decreased growth rate and allows to quantify the causal factors. Moreover, it is possible to simulate this model to derive implications in terms of expected future trends.
