Los objetivos de la presente investigación son analizar e interpretar la organización semiótica del nombre propio en la obra de José Saramago, un tema recurrente en muchos de sus escritos, tanto de ficción como autobiográficos. Para ello se revisan las novelas, cuentos, diarios y escritos autobiográficos, así como algunas de sus intervenciones en foros y conferencias. Una vez hecho un inventario de las semióticas del nombre, tanto de su presencia como de su ausencia, se recurre, siguiendo la propia sugerencia de Saramago, al autor como fuente de interpretación, para, finalmente, proponer una hipótesis interpretativa que explique las diversas problemáticas de la identidad/anonimato a través de recursos antroponímicos. Dicha hipótesis se fundamenta en los cambios que el propio autor sufrió en la constitución de su identidad civil (nombre, fecha de nacimiento, etc.). This research aims at analysing and interpreting the semiotic organization of names of the characters in the works by José Saramago, a recurrent theme in many of his fictional and autobiographic writings. A revision of his novels, stories, journals and autobiographic writings has been conducted, as well as some of his participations in forums and conferences. Once an inventory of the semiotics of given names –regarding their presence and absence– has been completed, the research turns, following Saramago’s own suggestion, to the author as a source of interpretation. Finally, an interpretive hypothesis is offered to explain the diverse problematic of identity/anonymity through anthroponymic resources. This hypothesis follows the changes the author suffered in the constitution of his own civil identity.
