{"abstract":"Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) practitioners in the Philippines, locally known as “behavior therapists,” primarily implement ABA-based interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Their role aligns with “behavior technicians” internationally. This qualitative study, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), explored the lived experiences of Filipino ABA practitioners. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight ABA practitioners from private therapy centers in Metro Manila and Bulacan. Data analysis involved systematic coding and thematic analysis guided by IPA procedures. Findings showed practitioners often entered the field through situational opportunities but remained due to personal fulfillment from client progress. Daily practices focused on rapport-building, teaching functional skills, implementing individualized programs, and collaborating with parents. Participants reported personal and professional growth, including increased patience, empathy, and emotional awareness. Challenges included emotional and physical fatigue, professional self-doubt, difficulty managing challenging behaviors, inconsistent parental follow-through, income instability, and limited societal recognition. Practitioners coped through peer support, supervision, reflective practice, and self-directed learning. The study emphasizes the need for accessible training and certification, strengthened supervision, clearer ethical standards, and formal recognition of ABA within the Philippine regulatory framework to ensure practitioner well-being and high-quality services.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Mary Anne Garduque","Christoper Sasot"],"date":"2026-05-16","doi":"10.70838/pemj.560604","id":7887,"issue":6,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"4a568db438ab231ef268fe65690326d489c59d9708b70a346465b30684793878","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Exploring the Lived Experiences of Filipino Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Practitioners: A Qualitative Study","volume":56}
