Abstract

Social media platforms play important roles in transforming how students, particularly those who belong to Generation Z, seek and engage with information. This study examined the influence of social media utilization on students’ information-seeking behavior in selected private basic education institutions in Toril, Davao City during the School Year 2025–2026. Using a descriptive regression design, a total of 298 Grade 12 students were selected to answer a validated survey questionnaire. Data gathered were analyzed by employing mean and simple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed a high level of purpose in social media usage, while the frequency and extent of use were at a moderate level. In terms of information-seeking behavior, students demonstrated a high level, characterized by active searching, evaluation and verification of information, use of diverse sources, and task-oriented application for academic purposes. Furthermore, the analysis showed a positive and significant influence of social media utilization on information-seeking behavior, suggesting that increased engagement leads to more active and effective information-seeking practices. Based on the findings, it is recommended that students should be guided to use social media responsibly and purposefully, focusing on academic-related searching rather than entertainment use.
