Abstract

Video-based instruction has emerged as an innovative instructional approach that enhances students’ learning experiences through visual demonstrations, self-paced learning, and interactive engagement, particularly in performance-based subjects such as Philippine folk dances. This research investigated the lived experiences of junior high school students in learning Philippine folk dances through an instructional approach based on video when studying at Biliran Province State University -Laboratory High School during School Year 2025-2026. It sought to establish students’ lived experience, explored the perceived effectiveness of video-based instruction, and developed a more contextually relevant video-based instructional module based on the study's findings. The research design applied in the study was a descriptive-phenomenological design, guided by Colaizzi's analysis method. The participants (Grade 7 students, n=14) were selected purposefully, and data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The results indicated the presence of four emergent themes namely (1) Clarity and Comprehension, which highlighted the importance of visual demonstrations and better understandings; (2) Autonomy and Flexibility as the component that emphasized the importance of learning at its own pace and being independent of others; (3) Skill Development, which highlighted the need to self-monitor and improve performance; and (4) Constraints and Challenges, which identified limiting interactions, technological problems, and environmental distractions. The results indicated that the video-based instruction program increased the understanding, involvement, confidence, and performance of students in learning the elements of Philippine folk dances. Nevertheless, its efficiency depended on access to instructional support, technology, and favorable learning conditions. According to the results, an Enhanced Contextualized Video-Based Instructional Module of Philippine Folk Dances was created to enhance clarity of instruction, learner autonomy, skill acquisition, and responsive instructional support. The research found that video-based instruction has the capability to be an effective instructional strategy and meaningful in teaching performance-based subjects such as the Philippine folk dances.
