{"abstract":"This action research, conducted within a lesson study framework, examined how integrating a structured sketchbook routine into Grade 9 physics instruction supported students’ understanding of the Law of Conservation of Momentum. The study addressed the gap in research on how iterative lesson study cycles develop sketchbook scaffolding for abstract concepts like momentum, especially in mixed classrooms with English language learners. A team of three teachers collaboratively designed, taught, observed, and refined a research lesson using a custom 10-page sketchbook scaffolded through a gradual-release model. A post-test–only descriptive design measured student performance in three classes (N = 57) with a 16-item summative momentum test. Students had a combined post-test average of 12.63/16 (78.9%, SD = 2.72), with 73.7% exceeding proficiency. The sheltered class of English learners scored lower than regular classes but mostly reached at least the developing level, indicating the drawing-based design provided a fair way to participate. Teachers noted sketchbooks helped students externalize Before/After reasoning, minimize sign errors, and manage algebraic translation. Limitations include the post-test–only design and restriction to three classes in one high school. The findings suggest that sketchbook routines combined with lesson study offer an accessible, equity-oriented approach for abstract physics instruction in K-12 classrooms.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["May-Annjoy Agpuon","Reymond DelaCruz","Athena Jil Mercado"],"date":"2026-07-22","doi":"10.70838/pemj.600603","id":8598,"issue":6,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"3c712caa606aaf3bab4535df97fe511a01dcf84c7038e754fb82681dfbe09dbe","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Drawing the Invisible: An Action Research and Lesson Study on Grade 9 Students’ Understanding of Conservation of Momentum Through Sketchbook Learning","volume":60}
