{"abstract":"This qualitative study explores the lived experience of five Filipino adults, aged 19–25, who have been active in the anime fan community for at least five years, focusing on identity formation and emotional wellness. While quantitative data indicate comfort from anime among Filipinos, psychological studies on this comfort, especially concerning Filipino cultural background, are scarce. Semi-structured interviews and a six-stage recursive process revealed four superordinate themes. Narrative Escapism as Proactive Recovery describes participants using anime to “recharge” (pahinga) from daily stress. Character Identification and Self Growth involves fans using fictional character archetypes to develop resilience. The Kapwa Bond highlights how Filipino values like kapwa (shared identity) shape perceptions of parasocial relationships, making fictional characters seem hindi-ibang-tao (one of us). Low Context Social Decoding shows participants using anime’s explicit visual language to structure processing social cues in the high-context Filipino culture. Overall, anime is an important tool for navigating young adulthood challenges and ambiguous social situations, offering culturally contextualized informal psychological strategies for negotiating the boundaries of one’s loob (internal self) and labas (outside world).","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Juvenal Dalimeg","Armando Urbiztondo","Maureen Angat"],"date":"2026-07-14","doi":"10.70838/pemj.590902","id":8448,"issue":9,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"b020c82bddd4154948b1ad1430056bfcd65a5fe6374342a14188b3e00a246b3d","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Between Loob and Labas: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Identity Synthesis and Resilience Among Filipino Anime Fans","volume":59}
