{"abstract":"This study investigated the effectiveness of a game-based reading program on the reading comprehension of 36 Grade 3 learners in a small school in the Division of Malaybalay City during the School Year 2023-2024. The research used a one-group pretest-posttest design and total enumeration sampling. A Division Standardized Reading Comprehension Test was administered to determine the learners' reading performance in vocabulary, word decoding, and reading comprehension skills before and after the game-based learning intervention. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and thematic analysis. Results showed that after implementation, learners achieved a very satisfactory proficiency level for vocabulary skills, very satisfactory for word decoding skills, and satisfactory for reading comprehension skills. Overall, the learners' reading comprehension level was satisfactory post-intervention. A significant difference was found in learners’ reading comprehension skills before and after the game-based learning. Three main themes emerged from learners' experiences: GBL as an innovative approach, a functional learning strategy, and an engaging and authentic experience. The study concludes that incorporating educational games into reading instruction can significantly enhance student reading comprehension.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Rosame Valmores","Victoria Albacete"],"date":"2026-05-27","doi":"10.70838/pemj.570302","id":7975,"issue":3,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"0541c2505dcdc1753a45f65f2e34aee01a656db2ca6ab78072b63008a1ec2c1e","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Game-Based Learning: A Teaching Intervention Strategy to Improve the Reading Performance of Grade 3 Learners","volume":57}
