{"abstract":"This study described the language competencies of five non-English major teachers of Clarin National High School of Fisheries and Nahawan National High School in Clarin district public high schools during the 2023-2024 school year. Using a mixed-method data-validation research design, data was gathered through a researcher-modified questionnaire and one-on-one in-depth interviews to understand their attitudes, challenges, and coping mechanisms. Analysis revealed that non-English majors demonstrated language competencies in teaching English. Despite insecurity and self-doubt, they developed empathy, created supportive environments, and showed adaptability by developing engaging strategies. Challenges included difficulty adapting to English teaching strategies, limited familiarity with the English curriculum and materials, lack of confidence, and classroom management issues. Their coping mechanisms involved formulating strategies, seeking support from colleagues, engaging in self-study, collaborating with experienced English teachers, self-reflection, seeking feedback, participating in developmental activities, and using trial-and-error approaches. The study concluded that while these teachers demonstrated language competencies, they faced significant challenges, particularly a lack of confidence. It is recommended that non-English major teachers undergo consistent professional development programs to strengthen their content knowledge and pedagogical skills in teaching English.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Eric Baay"],"date":"2026-05-17","doi":"10.70838/pemj.560706","id":7899,"issue":7,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"5ef7b60dfc303db2798a8f4e8b23beb3ffcae1d3c6ac1f21166a84233f0ba64d","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Lived Experiences of Non-English Majors Teaching English in Secondary Schools","volume":56}
