{"abstract":"This study explored the challenges and adaptive responses of women of reproductive age undergoing breast cancer treatment in Bohol, Philippines, using Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model. A descriptive qualitative phenomenological design involved five purposively selected participants from Tagbilaran City receiving systemic therapy. Semi-structured interviews and Colaizzi’s method for data analysis revealed three primary challenges: physical and physiological changes (fatigue, nausea, alopecia, functional decline); emotional disruption and body image alteration (fear, uncertainty, diminished self-esteem); and marital, parental, and career role changes (dependence, guilt, occupational disruption). Adaptations included personal strategies (bodily adjustment, acceptance, positive reframing, spirituality) and external supports (family caregiving, empathic healthcare communication, faith/peer networks). Participants also described a transformation, “New Me,” reflecting renewed purpose, identity reconstruction, and spiritual growth, aligning with Roy’s four adaptive modes. The study concludes that adaptation is a complex negotiation between resilience and vulnerability, requiring holistic care addressing physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and relational needs. Findings emphasize patient-centered oncology nursing integrating symptom management, psychosocial screening, fertility and role-function counseling, spiritual care, caregiver involvement, and peer support, contributing to oncology nursing practice, education, and policy in resource-limited settings.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Carmel Therese Lopez","Iam Vernel Sendrijas","Jimmy Bucar"],"date":"2026-01-28","doi":"10.70838/pemj.510903","id":7084,"issue":9,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"f90dd6c38a8a784e676cd96f3eaccb77a238de084613f7e2af34f2f12c7bda88","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Challenges and Adaptations: Lived Experiences of Women of Reproductive Age Undergoing Breast Cancer Treatment in Bohol, Philippines","volume":51}
