{"abstract":"This study explores how mental health care providers in the Philippines understand “malasakit,” a Filipino value signifying deep compassion and shared humanity, within their professional context. Using a narrative inquiry method with Murray’s qualitative research approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine mental health care providers. Their narratives revealed “malasakit” as an inner commitment shaped by emotional bonds, personal values, hope, and family influence, extending beyond professional obligation. It emerged as a sustaining force for perseverance amid heavy workloads, resource constraints, and emotionally demanding cases, acting as a moral compass for ethical decision-making and reinforcing accountability. Participants indicated that “malasakit” is strengthened through lived experiences, reflective practice, and shared struggles with colleagues, fostering solidarity. This sense of care transforms service delivery into meaningful engagement, enabling practitioners to maintain compassion and resilience despite systemic challenges. Nine major focal themes and seventeen sub-themes emerged, portraying “malasakit” as both a source of strength and vulnerability. This research offers insights for institutions and providers to encourage culturally rooted, human-centered mental health approaches embedded in Sikolohiyang Pilipino, contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate mental health care system in the Philippines.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Catherine Juanillo"],"date":"2026-01-23","doi":"10.70838/pemj.510801","id":7072,"issue":8,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"e9d48f1559053189b42f53b9f7e03bf0464e1b13fc2dbd18b79325f9ee1456da","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Exploring the Philippine Cultural Value “Malasakit” in Filipino Mental Health Care: A Narrative Inquiry","volume":51}
