{"abstract":"This comparative quantitative study assessed the English-speaking proficiency of tourism workers in Siargao Island, a prime Philippine tourist destination, and explored implications for elementary English language teaching. The research examined respondents’ demographic profiles and evaluated their proficiency across fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation, also investigating significant differences across demographic groups. Findings showed tourism workers had an overall average English-speaking proficiency (M = 6.02, SD = 0.65). Pronunciation was rated highest (M = 6.44, SD = 0.67), followed by fluency and coherence (M = 6.18, SD = 0.73) and lexical resource (M = 5.96, SD = 0.70). Grammatical range and accuracy received the lowest rating (M = 5.49, SD = 0.71). A repeated-measures ANOVA confirmed significant differences among subskills (F = 94.19, p < .01), with all pairwise comparisons statistically significant (p < .01). Only length of experience significantly affected fluency and coherence (p = .03), while other demographic variables showed no significant influence (p > .05). These results indicate that while workers can communicate, grammar and vocabulary limitations may impede complex interactions. Based on these findings, a learning material, “English for Young Explorers,” was developed to help elementary learners build foundational speaking skills relevant to tourism contexts.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Roshelle Verutiao","Merlyn Estoque"],"date":"2025-07-29","doi":"10.70838/pemj.430605","id":5953,"issue":6,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"f592a5322d3880a1c19c8882c8f4ba19efa4d025b106e27f057286079fd561ba","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"English Speaking Skills of Tourism Workers in Siargao","volume":43}
