{"abstract":"This study examined the correlation between Catch-Up Friday, a literacy intervention under the Department of Education's National Learning Recovery Program, and the academic performance and reading comprehension of Grade 5 learners in a public elementary school in Central Visayas, Philippines. The intervention addressed literacy deficits exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A quantitative approach used the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) and English grades from the third and fourth grading periods of School Year 2023–2024. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test assessed pre- and post-intervention differences. Results showed significant improvements in both reading comprehension and English grades (p < 0.05). Specifically, there was a significant increase in students reaching \"instructional\" and \"independent\" reading levels and a reduction in those at the \"frustration\" level. No significant relationships were observed between learners’ academic performance and their sex (r = -0.08, p = 0.58) or age (r = 0.14, p = 0.32), affirming the intervention’s effectiveness regardless of demographic variables. These findings support the efficacy of Catch-Up Friday in combating learning loss and promoting literacy. Sustained implementation, expansion to other grades, contextualized materials, teacher training, and increased family involvement are recommended.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Jansen Piedra","Daisy Obiso"],"date":"2025-07-26","doi":"10.70838/pemj.430507","id":5936,"issue":5,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"77e708b7403dbd7a7c2869f94f08d47ea561f58e7587742c7cc931587de9367c","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Examining the Correlation Between Catch-Up Friday and Reading Comprehension and Academic Performance of Grade 5 Learners","volume":43}
