{"abstract":"Inclusive education in the Philippines integrates learners with special needs into mainstream classrooms, presenting both opportunities and challenges, particularly in subjects like English. This qualitative multiple-case study explored the academic journey and support systems of Grade 10 SPED learners in an English mainstream classroom in a public high school in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat. In-depth interviews with two SPED learners, one with autism and one with an intellectual disability, were analyzed using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged regarding their classroom experiences: initial emotional response, positive classroom experiences, challenges faced, coping strategies, teacher support, and parental involvement. The study revealed that SPED learners experience a mix of emotional responses, positive interactions, academic difficulties, and varied support from teachers and parents. Two additional themes, unique learning approaches and strengths and areas needing extra help, described how these experiences shape their lives, portraying them as unique, adaptive, and resilient. Both cases shared similar mainstream English classroom experiences and unique learning approaches. However, they differed in recognizing strengths and areas needing help: the learner with intellectual disability explicitly identified weaknesses in writing, communication, and English-speaking skills, while the learner with autism focused on strengths and did not mention areas needing help.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Sharmaine Salomon","Marjorie Lumogdang"],"date":"2025-06-09","doi":"10.70838/pemj.390903","id":5492,"issue":9,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"64d155f4543cb2dd6f3c260765520c425ff1e1a2554328cdde1cb2bdecf80e7d","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Journey of the SPED Learners in the English Mainstream Classroom: A Multiple-Case Study","volume":39}
