{"abstract":"This study investigated psychological distress, coping mechanisms, and help-seeking behaviors among Filipino international students in Australia, a population experiencing rapid growth and facing challenges like language barriers, financial issues, living arrangements, and cultural adjustments. A quantitative descriptive-correlational and descriptive comparative research design was employed, utilizing data from 386 respondents selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through an online survey including the Kessler-10 (K-10), Brief COPE Scale, and General Help-Seeking Questionnaire (GHSQ). Results indicated that Filipino international students in Australia most likely experience moderate psychological distress and predominantly use problem-focused coping mechanisms. Despite evident distress, they did not prefer seeking help for personal problems or suicidal ideation. Psychological distress positively correlated with problem-focused (r = 0.354) and emotion-focused (r = 0.546) coping mechanisms, but showed no relationship with help-seeking behaviors (r = 0.059, r = -0.028). Help-seeking behavior revealed a significant relationship with coping mechanisms (r = 0.211 & r = 0.213, r = 0.192 & r = 0.13, r = 0.118). Psychological distress and avoidant coping mechanisms varied by age (p = 0.001, p = 0.039), and financial capacity influenced help-seeking behavior (p = 0.038, p = 0.5557). The findings highlight the importance of KALMA, a peer support mental health program, to address these challenges and distress.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Myra Mia delosReyes"],"date":"2025-06-04","doi":"10.70838/pemj.390503","id":5434,"issue":5,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"c41200aafc2459a44a8903766b4c3d4d728cfd6da041a276d5db8e9053237696","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Psychological Distress, Coping Mechanisms, and Help-Seeking Behaviors among Filipino International Students in Australia: A Basis for Developing a Peer Support Mental Health Program","volume":39}
