{"abstract":"This study assessed the writing performance of Maritime freshmen students and the strategies used by English teachers in English 1 classes at the University of the Visayas. Using a descriptive-correlational analysis and a researcher-made questionnaire, the study surveyed Maritime freshmen students and English teachers. Findings revealed that graphic organizers were the most utilized teaching strategy, followed by blueprinting and peer talk, while timeline, story starter, and simulation of games were least used. Regarding students’ writing performance, 97.01% were poor in vocabulary, 25.12% excellent in sentence construction, and 88.31% poor in paragraph development. The final grade in English 1 classes was predominantly fair (41.2%), with an overall average of 2.7 (fair). However, no significant correlation was found between writing performance and final grades. Facilitating factors for teaching writing included teacher commitment, administration support, and student interest, while hindering factors were non-conducive classrooms, mass admission, lack of administration support, and heavy teaching loads. A program design is recommended to enhance students' writing performance.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Sarah Nemenzo"],"date":"2024-08-28","doi":"10.5281/zenodo.13381768","id":3501,"issue":5,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"8f23697b69e88e064f1099e9e092e5021901c2de82d4a8afc47b1cdc6a38167d","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"English Teachers’ Strategies and Students’ Writing Performance","volume":24}
