{"abstract":"This study assessed mathematical competence and problems encountered among 247 Grade 12 students from four public senior high schools in Danao District, Bohol. Using a researcher-made questionnaire, the study found that students' mathematical competence in both general mathematics and statistics and probability was low, indicating a poor level of mathematical mastery, particularly in logic within general mathematics. A structured questionnaire adapted from Rameli & Kosnin (2016) identified problems and difficulties, revealing students were moderately serious about issues related to the nature of math as a subject and self-factor. Despite very satisfactory academic performance, a relationship was found between mathematical competence and age, sex, and track when grouped. Specifically, there was sufficient evidence for a relationship between age and mathematical competence, but insufficient evidence when grouped by sex and track. Problems and difficulties showed a relationship with track, but not with age and sex. Furthermore, problems and difficulties, mathematical competence, and academic performance were statistically significant to each other. The findings suggest a need for coordinated instructional planning to improve students' competence and academic performance.","abstract_source":"gemini_shortened","authors":["Christian Jay Paquibot"],"date":"2026-09-19","doi":"10.70838/PEMJ.621005","id":10471,"issue":10,"journal":{"issn":"2822-4353","name":"Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal"},"pdf_sha256":"5d9134eefe87c298f214c65a12771ca32f3ac16213a8afc242f66c0cd2f55c1c","schema":"scimatic-article/1","title":"Mathematical Competence and Problems Encountered Among the Senior High School, Danao District, Bohol","volume":62}
