Abstract
The study aimed to assess the effects of social media slang contextualization on students’ academic language proficiency and literacy development served as basis for instructional approach in one of the public secondary schools in the Division of Cavite. The research focused on the level of students’ academic proficiency utilizing the social media slang contextualization in terms of understanding of vocabulary, contextual appropriateness, code-switching skills, and critical thinking and analysis; and the level of students’ literacy development utilizing the social media slang contextualization in terms of vocabulary acquisition, contextual awareness, code-switching proficiency, and digital literacy engagement. The respondents were the students enrolled in one of the public secondary schools in the Division of Cavite. The researcher used the non-probability sampling utilizing the purposive sampling technique in determining the respondents of the study. Moreover, the researcher utilized a researcher-made instrument. The findings revealed that social media slang contextualization improves students' vocabulary, contextual appropriateness, code-switching, critical thinking, and analysis. Also, social media slang contextualization positively impacts students' literacy development by enhancing vocabulary, awareness, code-switching, and digital literacy engagement. Moreso, students’ academic language proficiency and literacy development is significantly correlated utilizing the social media slang contextualization. In addition, students’ academic language proficiency and literacy development are significantly correlated using social media slang contextualization. As an outcome of the findings and the conclusions, the following recommendations were enumerated: Teachers may incorporate relevant social media slang examples into lessons to make learning more engaging and relatable, helping students understand informal language use in digital communication. Students may engage actively in classroom activities that involve social media slang to build familiarity and confidence, while understanding its proper use in informal versus formal settings. School administrators may provide training for teachers on integrating social media slang into pedagogical practices effectively and responsibly, ensuring consistent and meaningful implementation across classrooms.
