Abstract
The research study determined the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, grade level, parent’s average monthly income, and parent’s educational attainment. It also determined the level of learner’s attitudes towards mathematics instruction at Talipao national High School – Main in terms of motivation, self – efficacy, anxiety, interest and engagement, and attitudes towards teaching methods. Significant differences in the level of learner’s attitudes towards mathematics instruction at Talipao national High School – Main when data are grouped according to demographic profile was also assessed. Lastly, it determined the significant correlation among the subcategories subsumed under the level of learner’s attitudes towards mathematics instruction at Talipao national High School – Main on mathematics instruction. The research study used descriptive – survey design. It was conducted at Talipao National High School – Main using 100 junior high school students as respondents of the study. Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents of the study. The research instrument was composed of two parts. Part I is about the demographic profile of the respondents. Part II is about the level of learner’s attitudes towards mathematics instruction in terms of otivateon, self – efficacy, anxiety, interest and engagement, and attitudes towards teaching methods. There are 11 statements for each subcategory. Frequency and percentage were used to analyze problem 1. Mean and standard deviation was used for problem 2. T – test for gender and ANOVA for the other variables was used for problem 3. Pearson r was used for problem 4. It was found that the demographic profile of the student-respondents showed most are aged 15-16 years. There is an even distribution across gender and grade levels. Great majority of the student-respondents come from a family with monthly income of 5,000 and below reflecting low socio – economic status and most have parents who attained high school level. The findings indicate varying levels of influence from different subcategories subsumed under the level of on the factors influencing the learners’ attitudes towards mathematics instruction among junior high school students at Talipao National High School-Main. The findings indicate that the demographic variables of age, gender, grade level, parents’ monthly income, and parents’ educational attainment do not significantly affect the learners’ attitudes towards mathematics instruction among junior high school students at Talipao National High School-Main, Division of Sulu. The findings indicate that motivation, self-efficacy, interest, and engagement are significantly correlated with students’ attitudes toward mathematics instruction.
